Backpacking – Introduction to Backpacking
October 10, 2020 - October 12, 2020
FreeThe Troop is offering 2, that’s right 2(!), options for overnight backpacking this October. Both are from Saturday, 10/10 to Monday 10/12 (or part thereof). We are treating one as an introductory to overnight backpack camping for Scouts who have limited experience hiking with a full pack, and the other for Scouts who have more experience or want a bigger challenge.
This sign-up is for the beginner backpacking trip to Sawyers Pond. Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e094baeaf28abff2-introduction1
There is one shelter (sleeps 6) and 6 tent platforms (max 8 people per site) located at the edge of Big Sawyer Pond, this campsite is perfect for the beginner backpacker, or camper who can only hike in a short distance. Only 1.5 miles from the end of Sawyer River Road, and 4.5 miles from the Kancamagus Hwy (Rt 112). Sawyer Pond Campsite has 2 toilets.
This trip is for scouts who have little experience backpacking. Before the trip, we will cover gear, how to pack, safety, weather, and navigation. Scouts will plan their own meals.
We should plan on being ready to go at the trailhead by 10 AM. A map and directions will be circulated within the next week or two. We are heading for Sawyers Pond in leaf-peeping season, so are expecting a bit of a crowd. The shelter cannot be reserved, so we will plan on camping discreetly nearby if it is full. On Sunday we may go for a hike up Stair Col Trail before retracing our steps to the trailhead.
We will circulate an official gear list before the trip.
